| How To Choose A Sleeping Bag
*Consider what type of climate you will be camping in. If you are sleeping in moist climates,
choose a synthetic fiber bag as down and flannel once wet, will loose their loft and not keep you warm.
*Consider what seasons you will use your sleeping bag. Goose down will supply the most warmth for the
least amount of weight. Synthetic fiber fills of polyester will provide warmth also and the positive about
these bags, is that they will provide warmth even when wet and will dry much more rapidly than down bags.
The disadvantage for synthetic fill sleeping bags is that they are gnerally heavier and bulky.
*Consider buying a sleeping bag rated for the climate you will be sleeping in. To be on the safe side, you may
want to choose a sleeping bag rated for slightly cooler temperatures.
*Consider what type of sleeping bag you want. Rectangular bags with synthetic fill will meet most of you summer
needs. Mummy bags fit you closer and so will keep the heat in better. If you are a backpacker, you may want to
choose a mummy sleeping bag as it takes up less space and rolls up smaller. You should choose a sleeping bag that
is the right size for you. If your bag is too large, you will not stay as warm.
*Consider buying the best sleeping bag you can as more expensive bags tend to last longer and will be more true
to their temperature rating. Synthetic bags are less expensive than down sleeping bags.
*Consider using a sleeping pad or mat with your sleeping bag as it will help insulate you from the cold or heat in
the ground. Foam core pads will offer more insulation than air pads. For winter camping you may want to use both
an air pad and foam pad for increased insulation from the ground.
*Remember to care for your sleeping bag and pad in order to make them last. Store in a dry cool place out of the sun.
Air out your sleeping bag and pad after each camping outing to make certain they are completely dry. Store you pad
or mat unrolled with valve open. Store your sleeping bag unrolled and hang loosely. This will keep from damaging the
insulation and increase the life of your bag. |
